Today was the first day of assessment class 8Y01 as a teacher candidate. There was a lot of information to be retained which I found quite challenging but doing group work and sharing ideas with my peers helped me understand assessment more than I already did. I found that together we were able to up with many of the aspects that are incorporated in assessment.
As of right now I believe that assessment is there for both you as a teacher and for the learner in your educational setting. Assessment helps understand learners in our classroom which further helps us as we create differentiated forms of assessment for the different learners we will encounter. This will guide learners to solve problems or tasks by helping them move along their educational pathway. Assessment is both initial and ongoing and teachers are assessing throughout the day on the many tasks in the classroom. Assessment allows for the development of learners to help them succeed in school and in real life situations while also helping us educators develop as we learn what strategies we used were effective for one student but ineffective for another student and vice versa. I do believe in alternative assessment for student who do not learn a certain way which is important as we are able to help the student move forward in education because of our ability to adapt to their learning style. Overall we as teacher should be seeking and interpreting for use by the learners and us educators in order to help both parties succeed and so we can establish where learners are going, where they are right now and how to lead them to reach their goal.
Overall, great class, there was a lot of information and I look forward to learning more about assessment.

For me, Growing Success has showed me that every student can be assessed fairly no matter and that you as instructor should be able to guide the learning of each of your students. Growing Success is a guide unlocking the potential of all our students and provides us with the information to do so. What I found most important personally is the Evaluation section. One of my concerns with assessments included giving out marks and in particular marks below level 1-. There is a sub-heading called "The meaning and use of 'R' and of percentage marks below 50 per cent" which explains thoroughly the process you would take for specific grades. I found this extremely useful for me as it helps me answer my concerns, especially because when I was in school, grades were everything. Growing Success also helps me transition from that fixed mindset.
Growing Success is a helpful document that will make teaching more efficient and help not only the teachers who use it, but the students who will benefit from the teachers using it appropriately.
